Oil Me Up!
Many of us have been in that position where we have run out of a moisturizer and are unsure of what we can use as a replacement. I have definitely been in that position but I also struggle with eczema so finding a substitute can be very scary. Here are some things you probably have in your kitchen that can be used to replace your moisturizer which also have great benefits!
Olive Oil
First, we have good ole olive oil. This is one of the most common oils to have in your home; not only is it versatile in cooking, but it’s also a great multi-tasker when it comes to skincare. Let’s talk about the benefits.
Hydration: The chemical composition of olive oil is actually similar to human skin which makes it a great moisturizer. Containing squalene and vitamin E, which helps our skin retain moisture.
Rich in antioxidants: Olive oil is rich in healthy fats and antioxidants like vitamin E, vitamin A, polyphenols, and phytosterols which can help combat oxidative stressors and neutralize free radicals that can lead to premature aging.
Starting our list off strong, olive oil is a very common kitchen item that works wonders as a moisturizer. As much as olive oil is suitable for most skin types, it may be best for people who have sensitive skin and acne-prone skin to be cautious. Like all skin care, it is always best to patch test in case of any allergic reactions.
Coconut Oil
Next up is probably my favorite oil to use. I have pretty sensitive skin — not acne- prone — and also struggle with eczema. Not only is coconut oil one of the best moisturizers for my skin but it also just smells divine. Coconut oil has so many amazing benefits for our skin and it’s no surprise that it is already incorporated in so many skin care brands. Here are some benefits.
Hydration: Coconut oil can help prevent any water loss from our skin which is why it works so well for hydration, it really locks all the moisture in place.
Anti-bacterial: Next, coconut oil has an antimicrobial bacteria called C12; this means it's great at preventing acne. However, on the flip side, it is still an oil so it can clog pores so keep that in mind.
Anti-inflammatory: Another property of coconut oil that I love is that it’s anti- inflammatory. When I have eczema flare- ups, my skin usually becomes super inflamed, irritated, and dry. Using coconut oil during this time is what really saves my skin.
Anti-aging: Coconut oil can boost collagen production. The increase of collagen can increase skin firmness and decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Moral of the story, I am a coconut oil stan and will always be. Coconut oil is great for people who suffer from eczema but also have sensitive skin. As someone who’s tried everything and is scared of trying new products, coconut oil is something I always have on hand in case of emergencies.
Avocado Oil
As tides have turned to more healthy eating, more and more people have been adding avocado oil to their kitchens. Not only is avocado great for cooking because it has a super high smoking point, but it also serves as an awesome moisturizer replacement. Although less common, don’t count this one out!
Collagen content: Avocado oil is great for protecting our collagen! More studies do need to be done to see if avocado oil replenishes collagen, but research shows that it does decrease all the pathways that break down our collagen.
Anti-inflammatory: Just like coconut oil, avocado oil is great for its anti- inflammatory properties; making it great for people who suffer from eczema, psoriasis, acne, and other skin conditions where inflammation is prominent.
Dry scalp: You may have seen avocado oil in hair products and that is because avocado oil is great in treating scalp dryness and flakiness. This seed oil has fungicidal and antimicrobial properties which is what makes it beneficial for someone who is prone to bacterial build up.
Although avocado oil can be more on the pricey side and not as available as olive oil or coconut oil, it is a great substitute for your favorite moisturizer!
Conclusion
Running out of your favorite moisturizer doesn’t have to spell disaster. With common kitchen oils like olive, coconut, and avocado oil, you have versatile and effective alternatives at your fingertips. Each oil offers unique benefits, from hydration and anti-inflammatory properties to anti-aging effects. Whether you’re dealing with eczema or just looking for a handy skincare backup, these oils can be a valuable addition to your routine. Always remember to patch test any new product to ensure it’s right for your skin. Embrace these kitchen staples and keep your skincare routine on track even in a pinch.
